FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
FOOD TECH TO DESIGN & CONSTRUCT BARBER FOODS PROCESSING & WAREHOUSE FACILITY
Portland, ME, January 6, 2005 – Massachusetts-based planning, engineering and construction firm Food Tech Structures has been retained by Barber Foods, manufacturer of innovative chicken entrees, appetizers and snacks, to design and construct its multi-phase, 210,000 square foot processing facility in Portland, Maine.
The project involves converting Barber Foods' newly acquired Milliken Road warehouse, the former SuperValu distribution center, to a cooked product production facility, and is being completed in two phases.
"The new location features easy access to I-95, a large site that allows for future growth, and an existing structure that is adaptable to conversion from warehouse space to a production facility," says Food Tech Senior Vice President David S. Wittliff, P.E.
Phase I is currently underway, consisting of 17,000 square feet of corporate office space, 60,000 square feet of freezer and 13,000 square feet of cooler renovations. Upon completion of Phase I, the corporate office staff will relocate from the St. John Street location in Portland to the refurbished office areas on Milliken Road, "which has been designed to accommodate Barber Foods' growing business," says Wittliff. Barber will also consolidate St. John Street's raw material and finished product into the newly renovated freezer space.
Phase II will entail utility upgrades, converting remaining building areas into processing and packaging lines of fresh and cooked product, and employment of production staff at the new location.
